Local sources in Nangarhar province confirm that a mullah imam in Jalalabad, the provincial capital, raped and murdered one of his students. The crime took place in the “Khales Family” area of the sixth district of Jalalabad.
According to sources, Mufti Waliullah, the accused, dumped the victim’s body under a bridge to conceal the crime. Sources added that earlier this year, in the month of Hamal, the mullah was accused of similar acts against four other students but faced no legal consequences.
It is reported that the Taliban have detained Mufti Waliullah, though local Taliban security officials in Nangarhar have not yet commented on the matter.
Concerns have grown over the rising reports of sexual assault, violence, and abuse in religious schools, particularly against children, since the Taliban regained control of Afghanistan.
