The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has issued a warning about the dire situation of pregnant women returning from Iran to Afghanistan at the Islam Qala border crossing.
In a report published on Monday, July 14, on its X (formerly Twitter) page, the UN agency stated that many of these women, already in delicate stages of pregnancy, have endured difficult journeys without access to basic prenatal care and now face severe shortages of essential facilities at the border.
The UNFPA representative in Afghanistan said: “Many are pregnant women, while children and adolescents are suffering from trauma and confusion. They urgently need healthcare services and psychosocial support.”
According to UN statistics, over one million Afghan migrants have returned from Iran in recent months alone through this border crossing.
Simultaneously, Pakistan continues to deport undocumented Afghan migrants.
The World Health Organization (WHO) had previously called for immediate attention to the situation of women and children at border crossings.
