The Taliban’s Supreme Court has announced that a woman and a man were flogged in Balkh province on charges of “extramarital relations and fleeing home.”

On Monday, 23 Saratan [July 14], the court published a statement on its X (formerly Twitter) page, reporting that each of the two was sentenced to 39 lashes.

According to the statement, the flogging was carried out in the courtyard of the group’s primary court, in the presence of the head of Balkh’s court, the head of the Department for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, and ordinary citizens.

It is worth noting that over the past few weeks, the Taliban have flogged about 60 men and women across Afghanistan on various charges.

These public floggings by the Taliban continue despite repeated condemnations by international human rights organizations, which have called on the group to end corporal punishment and public torture of defendants.

Ignoring these calls, the Taliban have repeatedly stated that they act in accordance with “Sharia.”
