Condemnation of Internet and Fiber Optic Shutdown in Afghanistan by the Taliban

2 Min Read

We, the members and activists of the Afghanistan Women’s Justice Movement, express our profound concern and deep regret regarding the Taliban’s complete shutdown of internet and fiber optic services across Afghanistan. This act is not merely a technical restriction—it is a clear manifestation of a systematic policy of oppression and monopolization of power, targeting the fundamental rights of citizens, particularly women and girls.

Access to the internet and digital communication technologies is not only a basic human right for Afghan women but also a critical tool for education, social participation, civil engagement, and presence in political and economic spheres. Restricting this access effectively silences women, diminishes educational and social opportunities, and undermines their participation in civil life.

By enforcing this shutdown, the Taliban not only violate international human rights norms and standards but also actively impede the cultural, economic, and social development of Afghanistan. Imposing such restrictions, especially in a context where women are already facing widespread marginalization, creates a profound humanitarian and social crisis.

We call on the international community, human rights organizations, and defenders of freedom of information and women’s rights to publicly condemn this violation and take concrete actions to restore full and free access to the internet and communication services in Afghanistan. Silence from the global community would signal complicity with the ongoing oppression of women and the weakening of Afghan civil society.

We firmly believe that no society can achieve lasting peace, justice, or sustainable development without freedom of expression, access to information, and the empowerment of women. The Taliban’s shutdown is not simply a technical restriction; it is a sign of a legitimacy crisis, a suppression of civil institutions, and a direct attack on the opportunities of Afghanistan’s future generations.

The Afghanistan Women’s Justice Movement strongly condemns this action and calls upon all to stand in defense of human rights and women’s rights.
