As Afghan Women Face Shrinking Access to Healthcare, Italy Pledges €2 Million for Drug Rehabilitation Centers

1 Min Read

The Italian Embassy in Kabul has announced a contribution of €2 million to support drug rehabilitation services in Afghanistan, aimed at sustaining treatment centers for both women and men struggling with addiction.

According to the embassy’s statement, the funding will ensure the continuation of vital treatment programs while also contributing to the livelihood and recovery of Afghan citizens.

The support comes at a critical time, as Afghanistan’s healthcare system—crippled by financial and structural shortages—remains unable to adequately address the country’s growing addiction crisis, particularly among women.

Recent data from the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) reveals that nearly 4 million Afghans—about 10% of the population—are addicted to narcotics. Women and children are the most vulnerable groups: only 1 in 18 women with addiction has access to treatment, compared to 1 in 11 men.

Experts warn that cultural barriers, poverty, and a lack of specialized facilities make it even harder for Afghan women to seek treatment, leaving thousands without critical care.
