UN General Assembly President: Afghan Women’s Deprivation Must End

2 Min Read

Annalena Baerbock, former German Foreign Minister and the newly elected President of the United Nations General Assembly, emphasized during the opening ceremony of the session that the international community must honor its commitments under the UN Charter. She stressed that it is time for the world to live up to its promises to the women and girls of Afghanistan.

Baerbock stated that under Taliban rule, Afghan women and girls have been deprived of their most basic human rights, a situation that is unacceptable to the global community.

She urged world leaders to take concrete action to end the systematic deprivation of women under the Taliban.

“The future of Afghan girls cannot be guaranteed by statements and promises alone,” Baerbock warned. “It requires serious decisions and joint global action. The international community must feel responsible for the destiny of Afghanistan’s next generation.”

The UNGA President further cautioned that ignoring the plight of Afghan women and girls is not only a clear violation of the UN Charter, but also poses grave consequences for the future of human rights and global peace.

These concerns come as, since the Taliban’s return to power in August 2021, Afghan women and girls have been barred from secondary and higher education, excluded from most workplaces, and severely restricted from participating freely in public life.

The United Nations and international organizations have repeatedly called on the Taliban to respect the fundamental rights of women and girls, but the group has so far ignored all such demands.
