The Taliban’s Supreme Court has announced that a woman and a man were flogged in Baghlan province on charges of extramarital relations.

According to a statement from the Taliban’s Supreme Court, these individuals were flogged on Tuesday, 2nd of Saur, based on the verdict of the Baghlan city primary court.

The statement said that each of these individuals received 35 lashes and were also sentenced to six months of enforced imprisonment.

The Taliban Supreme Court added that the flogging sentence was carried out in the presence of local Taliban officials and several residents of the area.

Human rights organizations have repeatedly expressed concern about the lack of a fair and transparent judicial process in Afghanistan under Taliban control.

Despite widespread opposition from human rights organizations against torture and corporal punishment, the Taliban continue to use public flogging as a tool of intimidation and repression.
