Somaya Ghulami made history as Afghanistan’s first female athlete to win a gold medal, representing the national taekwondo team at the South Asian Games.
She became the first Afghan woman to earn a gold medal in taekwondo at an international competition — a groundbreaking achievement in the country’s sports history.
Born in Mashhad and raised in Iran, Ghulami developed a passion for sports from childhood. Watching Afghanistan’s Olympic taekwondo medalist Rohullah Nikpai and receiving encouragement from her family strengthened her determination to succeed.
