Sara Bahai — Afghanistan’s First Female Taxi Driver

1 Min Read

Sara Bahai broke barriers as the first woman in Afghanistan to become a taxi driver, defying deep-rooted gender norms.

A university graduate and a teacher at Mawlana Jalaluddin Mohammad Balkhi High School in Mazar-i-Sharif, she has dedicated over 20 years to educating students. Yet, her modest teaching salary was never enough to support her family. Determined to provide for them, she took the extraordinary step of driving a taxi after school hours — becoming a symbol of courage and resilience.

Beyond her own trailblazing work, Bahai also empowers other women by organizing driving courses for women in Balkh province, inspiring many to follow her lead.
